Fire ravages cashew plantations at Malkarnem, farmers demand probe

Margao: A forest fire erupted in Malkarnem, Quepem, on Monday, causing extensive damage to cashew plantations in the area. This resulted in significant financial losses for farmers, who are now calling for an investigation into the cause and preventive measures for the future.
The blaze rapidly spread across the hills of Malkarnem, Chinch, Nagvem, and Odashe by Monday afternoon, leaving cashew orchard owners in distress. Local residents immediately joined efforts to combat the flames, while firefighters from the Curchorem fire station controlled the situation.
“This is happening for the fourth consecutive year now,” said a local. “Due to intense heat and wind conditions, the fire spreads uncontrollably, damaging both forest land and our cashew plantations. It’s essential that we find a permanent solution to this recurring problem.”
The incident follows a pattern of forest fires that plagued South Goa during the April-May period over the past 2-3 years. Hilly regions have been particularly vulnerable, with the hills of Paroda, Chinchinim, and Chapoli among those affected in previous outbreaks.
Fire control efforts were hampered by accessibility issues, with another resident pointing out, “The fire brigade made every effort to contain the blaze, but vehicles cannot access many parts of the forest, making it extremely challenging to control the spread.”
Farmers have now urged govt authorities to implement proactive measures. “Govt needs to take necessary steps regarding these fires. Creating water reserves within forest areas or developing access paths for fire brigades would help,” suggested a farmer.
