Margao: Police on Wednesday filed an FIR against police sub-inspector Nilesh Shirwaikar, attached to the Margao town police station, who was suspended earlier this week following an alleged assault on Navelim resident Edberg Pereira in police custody.
South Goa SP Tikam Singh Verma said that an offence has been registered against Shirwaikar. The FIR has been filed against Section 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and Section 198 (public servant disobeying law with intent to cause injury) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
The police had picked up Pereira from Navelim after they received a complaint that he was creating a nuisance to the public in an intoxicated condition. He was taken to Margao police station, where he allegedly continued his disruptive behaviour and verbally abused police personnel. The on-duty police staff allegedly resorted to physical force to restrain him.
Pereira sustained serious head injuries during the incident and was rushed to Goa Medical College, Bambolim, where he continues to undergo treatment.
