FIR after woman tourist harassed

Panaji/Calangute: Taking cognisance of the video of a woman being harassed with indecent gestures at Calangute, tourism department filed a formal complaint with the Calangute police station.

Tourism director Kedar Naik said that the department has a zero-tolerance policy towards harassment of tourists, particularly women.


“This office noticed certain media reports and video clips wherein a woman tourist was harassed at a beach by a person making lewd gestures, thereby outraging her modesty,” said Naik.

Naik said that an FIR was registered against the accused man under the relevant provisions of law, including Sections 74, 75, and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with other applicable sections.

“Such offences must be dealt with an iron fist to ensure the safety of tourists, which is the prime priority of this department,” said the tourism director.

An intoxicated man in a black shirt was seen suggestively dancing and blocking the path of a woman at a beach shack. The man had a Rs 500 note in his mouth, which he offered the woman. Offended by the man’s behaviour and unwanted approach, the woman snatched the money and threw it on the floor.

The woman’s act appeared to offend the man, who proceeded to make lewd and obscene gestures towards the woman while onlookers stood around without intervening.

In Nov, an online video surfaced of a 19-year-old influencer from Mumbai being harassed on Baga beach. Goa police managed to identify one of the accused persons, Atendra Singh of Rajasthan, and took him into custody. Singh and some other men offered the influencer money and stalked her along the beach.
