Face the music if you misuse power, Goa chief minister Sawant warns new cops, excise officers
Panaji: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday warned newly-joined Goa police personnel and excise department officers that they could be suspended or terminated from service if they misuse their powers.
Sawant told the newly-joined Goa police and excise personnel to perform their duties without any pressure. “Govt will not tolerate any wrongdoing, and we never have second thoughts about issuing showcause notices, suspending and terminating the services of Goa police personnel,” the CM, who also holds the home portfolio, said. “The excise department is a revenue-generating department, and they can fall prey to unwanted things. In the last five years, we have suspended excise department officials.”
A total of 83 Goa police personnel and 80 excise department officials successfully completed training at the Police Training School, Valpoi.
Sawant said, “You may think that the chief minister is threatening to suspend you on the first day of your service, but yes, I am giving you a warning that you will be suspended if you are found on the wrong foot. You should take this as a warning.” “One thing you have to always keep in mind. We have seen people thinking that they have power once they wear the uniform, and you may think of misusing that power at some point. We have terminated and suspended many newly-joined police, excise and those who joined the department of prison in the span of over two years. We will not discriminate against anyone while terminating or suspending service.”
The chief minister said that after the training, you are all ready to perform your duties wherever you are posted. “I hope you will perform your duties professionally,” he said.
Sawant said that police training schools conduct various training programmes for police. He said that we have to work for the country and respect the Constitution.
The CM told the new recruits to perform duties without any fear and not succumb to any pressure, and even if there is any pressure, then they have to work within the ambit of the law. “If you think something is wrong, then you should speak to your seniors, and it is important to take advice from them.”
Sawant attended the passing out parade of the 49th batch of recruit police constables, ASI wireless operators, recruit police drivers, and excise personnel in the presence of director general of police Alok Kumar, among others.
“I congratulate 7 ASI (wireless operators), 23 police constables, 53 PC/drivers, and 80 excise personnel for successfully completing their training. Being a police personnel is more a service to society than a job,” he said. “I am sure police, wireless personnel and excise recruits will serve the people of Goa with integrity and honesty.”
