Drive against motorcycles sans no. plates in Margao

Margao: The Margao town police have launched a drive against two-wheelers operating without proper registration number plates. A number of bikes were seized by the police in recent days as they cracked down on unauthorised use of vehicles.

Margao town police inspector Suraj Samant cited two recent cases that highlight the scope of the problem. “We noticed one bike without number plates being ridden around the town two-three days ago. The bike was intercepted. Both its number plates were missing,” Samant said.

When questioned, the young rider gave no satisfactory explanation for the missing plates. The owner was subsequently contacted, who claimed to have bought the vehicle from another person, stating that transfer formalities were pending. But when summoned to the police station, the owner failed to produce the required documentation.

In a separate incident, police noticed a motorcycle carrying no number plates parked in the Margao market area. “We seized it, and nobody has laid claim to it yet,” Samant said.

Police said such enforcement drives are conducted regularly. Standard procedure involves bringing the motorcycles to the police station and imposing fines. Motorcycles are only released after proper number plates are affixed.
