Dowry case filed against Nuvem man, his mother
Margao: Maina-Curtorim police have registered a case of dowry harassment following a complaint lodged by a woman against her husband and mother-in-law. Police sources said that an investigation in the case was currently under way.
According to police, the woman approached Maina-Curtorim police with allegations of persistent physical and mental abuse at her marital residence at Murida Grande, Nuvem. The alleged harassment, the complaint said, began in 2022 and centres on repeated demands for dowry.
The accused parties were identified as Chetan Muthal, the husband of the complainant, and his mother, Rekha. The complainant’s statement to police alleges a pattern of mistreatment including both physical violence and psychological intimidation, accompanied by explicit threats, police sources said.
Police inspector Arun Gawas Desai is overseeing the case, with sub-inspector Sonal Gaokar appointed as the investigating officer. “We are taking this matter very seriously and conducting a thorough investigation,” a police source privy to the investigation said.
The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Women’s rights advocates have expressed concern about the prevalence of dowry harassment cases and have called for swifter justice and stronger preventive measures.
