MAPUSA: Director general of police (DGP) Aditya Arya has said that the state needs to change from the pre-independence Indian Police Act 1861 to the people-friendly reforms like those in the Kerala Police Act .
"Goa needs a police act similar to the Kerala Police Act to help the common man. The pre-independence act being followed needs to be reformed," Arya said.
DGP Arya was speaking as the chief guest at the Elders Day function held at the Mapusa municipal hall on Sunday.
The DGP also stated that Goa will soon have a senior citizens cell of the Goa police to reach out to the senior citizens. "With the help of chief minister Digambar Kamat and home minister Ravi Naik we will soon formulate the senior citizens cell of the Goa police to cater to the needs of the senior citizens so that they don't feel isolated," Arya said.
"Our officers from the ranks of DySP, PI, PSI and constables will be visiting senior citizens to understand their needs and problems as and when possible," Arya added.
He also informed that Goa police will also be having special registers for senior citizens to report their concerns to them.
Earlier, around 200 senior citizens were guided by Dr Shekhar Salkar, Dr Niraj Goel and Dr Digambar Naik on various diseases. These doctors also assured free medical treatment to the senior citizens. The function was organized by the forum for senior citizens of India, in association with Lions club of Mapusa and Assagao.
