MARGAO: Health authorities have created an isolation ward in the TB hospital near Hospicio hospital in Margao, in case there is a need to quarantine Covid-19 suspects.

Medical superintendent of Hospicio Dr Ira Almeida told TOI on Thursday that the isolation ward at TB hospital will be put to use only if the quarantine facility at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) is overcrowded.

"We have kept adequate beds and all the necessary health monitoring equipment ready in the isolation ward at TB hospital," Almeida said.

The state government has upped measures to counter Covid-19 by creating two more isolations wards apart from the one at GMC-at TB hospital and Sakhali community health centre.

Chairman of the visiting committee of Hospicio, Dr Venkatesh Hegde, told TOI that he has checked the quarantine facility at TB hospital which, he said, was "adequate".

"Patients will first be screened at the Chicalim hospital, and the suspects detected here will be quarantined in the isolation ward at GMC. Only if the number of patients increases beyond the carrying capacity of GMC, patients will be shifted to TB hospital," Hegde said.
