PANAJI: Taking cognizance of a recent incident where a drunk woman driver ran down a couple of youth at Campal, Panaji, the traffic cell of the Goa police have begun night patrols to check drunken driving.
Almost 600 cases have been booked in the last 26 days, with 26 drivers booked on the night of August 15 alone.
Traffic police have purchased four new alcometers and are in the process of purchasing 12 more, said a senior police officer attached to traffic cell.
"Traffic police booked 594 drivers for drunken driving and they have been prosecuted," the officer told STOI.
Statistics reveal that in the last four years only 50% of hit-and-run cases have been detected by the Goa police.
Margao, Verna, Ponda, Porvorim and Vasco police stations reported the maximum number of two-wheeler accidents, while Panaji, Margao, Porvorim, Verna and Agassaim had the most accidents involving four-wheelers.
