MARGAO
: Slogans of ‘
Swachh Bharat’, ‘
Nitol Goem
’ and ‘
Clean Margao
’ have been voiced on numerous occasions by various elected representatives, with Prime Minister
Narendra Modi even going to the extent of appointing ‘ambassadors of cleanliness’ in states.
However, it appears that there is no seriousness on the part of authorities to take this initiative ahead.
Most government premises still lack basic hygiene. The situation is so bad in some of these premises that it poses a serious health hazard to those working there.
Stagnant water accumulated in the toilets in the vicinity of the barracks situated within the Margao Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) depot has unnerved employees who fear contracting life-threatening vector borne diseases such as dengue or malaria.
Speaking to TOI on the condition of anonymity, some employees lamented the failure of their higher-ups to act immediately upon their complaints of the dilapidated and shabby condition of their washrooms that have ankle-deep water around the room. As a temporary respite, the employees have placed four laterite bricks as to avoid having to step onto the flooded floor.
And that is not all. The toilet units lack doors and above the two non-functional washbasins is a broken window that is being protected by a thin metal sheet.
The other section of the KTC staff toilets has a widow that is open to the elements, with a high possibility of reptiles creeping in due to the wild growth of bushes just above the barracks.
Outside the barracks are rusted metal boxes lying on a rack with a paan-stained wall in the background. Also, empty liquor and plastic bottles have been strewn around in the courtyard near the barracks.
