Class XI student hangs self

PONDA: Two suicides were reported at Ponda on Tuesday.
Nikhil Sawant, 16, a Class XI student hanged himself from a ceiling fan at his house at Zuvarwada, Tivrem-Marcel in Ponda on Tuesday morning. He was a student of Vidya Prabodhini HSS, Porvorim, in Bardez. Police said the boy told his mother that he had some pain and went to bed. After some time, his mother found him hanging from a 'dupatta' tied to a ceiling fan in his bedroom.
His family rushed in, removed him from the noose, and took him to the primary health center at Betki, where doctors on duty declared him 'brought dead'. In the second case, Venkatesh Naik, a 68-year-old resident of Gaunem-Ponda allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a 'nullah' in his village and drowning late on Monday night.
Police said Naik had jumped into the 'nullah' late Monday night and he could not be traced. Police recovered his body on Tuesday morning and were unable to find a reason behind the death. The bodies of the senior citizen and the student were handed over to their respective families after the autopsies were conducted at the Goa medical college (GMC) and hospital, Bambolim, on Tuesday afternoon.
Police booked the cases as unnatural deaths under Section 174 CrPC.
