Chimbel residents oppose Unity Mall, say it is threat to lake

Panaji: With Goa State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) issuing an environmental clearance (EC) to Unity Mall at Chimbel, the villagers have decided to oppose the project, alleging that it is a direct threat to the lake and the aquifers on the hill.

SEIAA gave the green nod with conditions to use treated water from Tonca sewage treatment plant for its construction. The project proponent has also been directed to prepare a comprehensive mobility plan, among other instructions, to prevent traffic congestion in the area.

“This is the same area surrounding the designated Chimbel wetland lake where the IT Park project was proposed by govt in 2018,” said, Govind Shirodkar, Chimbel biodiversity management committee (BMC) chairman.

Raising concerns about adverse impacts on environment, livelihoods and the hydrogeology of the area, the locals had opposed the project and the IT park proposal had been dropped.

With an EC issued for the mall in an area of 20,855sqm recently and some fencing and other work being done at the site, the village is on the boil again. “Even the sarpanch had endorsed his support to the locals while adopting a resolution against it at the gram sabha,” Ana Gracias, a local activist said.

Further, the Chimbel panchayat in its fortnightly meeting had also passed a resolution opposing it, alleging lack of transparency and non-consultation with local body.

The project area comprises forested and agricultural land around the Chimbel lake, once supplying water to Panaji.

The locals will hold a rally from the village for a protest meeting against the project and govt’s 17-storeyed Prashasan Sthamb proposal, at Toyar lake at Kadamba plateau on Sunday morning.Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Navratri wishes, messages and colours !
