has got its second coastal police station with the inauguration of a police station at Chapora-Anjuna
on Friday. The police station will have within its jurisdiction 12 nautical miles off the world famous coastal area from Chapora to Baga.
Water resources minister and local MLA Dayanand Mandrekar along with director general of police Kishan Kumar, deputy inspector general of police (DIG) OP Mishra, Coast Guard DIG Manoj Bhadkar, PWD principal chief engineer JJS Rego and SP (coastal security) Allan D'Sa inaugurated the coastal police station at Chapora.
Under the coastal security scheme phase-II, four coastal police stations will come up at Tiracol, Chapora, Panaji in north and Talpona in south Goa. The Talpona coastal police station will be inaugurated on August 13 sources informed.
During first phase, three coastal police stations were sanctioned and are presently functioning at Betul, Mormugao harbour in South Goa and Siolim in North Goa.
"As Anjuna is a world famous tourist spot and tourists flock to the coastal belt, enhanced coastal security system is a necessity. The coastal police station at Chapora will go a long way in assisting security," said Mandrekar.
"But it's not that infiltration threats will come only from the sea, locals and police should be on the alert about threats from the land too," he said.
"Coastal security cannot be compromised. The coast guard and navy are the watch dogs but coastal security police stations will also help to step up vigil on the coast as part of broader coastal security management plans of the Union home ministry," DGP Kishan Kumar said.
The police station and other equipment, including boats, wireless system and radars, are funded jointly by the center and state governments under the coastal security scheme. In Goa, the government has also sanctioned 290 technical personnel for the coastal police.
