Canacona ITI runs from unsafe building, 220 students at risk
Canacona: The 35-year-old govt-run Industrial Training Institute (ITI ), seated on a hillock at Mastimol, here, is lying in a dilapidated condition and if the institute’s managing committee (IMC) members are to be believed, then a portion of the building can collapse any time.
The old building is fully worn out and can collapse any time, IMC member Datta alias Manoj Prabhugaonkar told TOI. He said the IMC feels that the stability of the building is very weak. He said as a member of IMC, it is his and the committee’s responsibility to give priority to the safety of the students and teachers.
The building is used by 220 students, who study engineering and non-engineering trades in two shifts and the institute staff.
The institute principal Anish Gaude said that the new building is almost ready and the same has been handed over, but the occupancy procedure is in progress.
He said that the fixing of furniture will be done and the new building will be made operational within a month. Gaude said the new building also requires an approach road and he has already written a letter to the PWD to take up the approach road work.
Since it has been raining heavily these days, this work has been at a halt. It will start no sooner the rain subsides, the principal said.
Gaude said for the old building, the renovation work file has already been passed and work order has been given. Work will start once the rain takes a break, he said.
Prabhugaonkar said that the committee has already spoken to the authority to immediately shift the students to the new building, considering their safety.
Once they shift to the new building, the engineering trade students will return to the old building after the renovation is complete, the principal said.
