Cabbies demand action against harassment in South Goa
Margao: Licensed taxi operators in South Goa on Thursday approached the South Goa superintendent of police seeking urgent intervention to address what they said was an increasing number of incidents of harassment that have disrupted their business operations.
In a representation to the SP, the taxi operators concerned pointed out that the incidents have occurred at multiple locations, including Varca, Calangute, Baga, and most recently at Palolem.
The operators claimed that over the past week, they were repeatedly confronted by groups of local drivers who, without any legal authority, demanded to check public service vehicle (PSV) badges, taxi meters, and booking details. “They often come in groups… Even when we stop briefly for tea breaks or lunch, they forcefully tell us to leave the place,” the representation stated. A police complaint in connection with the Palolem assault was already filed at Canacona police station, they said.
Terming the harassment as systematic and alarming, the memorandum urged police to take strict action against the perpetrators, to prevent unauthorised interference in the lawful functioning of taxis, and to ensure the safety of both drivers and passengers.
The operators also demanded a thorough verification of PSV badges and permits, pointing out that many illegal operators continue to ply freely while law-abiding drivers with proper documentation face constant intimidation. “We, the legal drivers, possess all the necessary permits and documents, yet due to such illegal activities, we are unable to carry out our business smoothly,” the representation added.
