Bird ambassadors: Mascots for Goa’s seven wildlife sanctuaries unveiled
Panaji: Seven bird species were unveiled as official ‘bird mascots’ for Goa’s wildlife sanctuaries during the eighth edition of the Goa Bird Festival on Friday. The selected bird species represent seven prominent wildlife sanctuaries across Goa, each chosen for their unique ecological significance and biodiversity. TOI had reported about the same on Jan 15.
The Malabar trogon, chosen for Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary, is an elusive species highly sought after by birdwatchers due to its striking appearance and rarity, making it a prime subject for photographers.
Malabar barbet for Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, endemic to the Western Ghats, is a vibrant bird species in the sanctuary’s rich biodiversity.
Malabar grey hornbill for Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park, has seen a rapid decline in its population. Malabar parakeet for Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary, is a coveted sight for visiting birdwatchers, particularly known for its colourful plumage.
The white-bellied woodpecker is chosen for Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary. Though the population of this bird is dwindling, conservation efforts in the sanctuary have helped maintain a stable habitat, aiding in the survival of this species.
The collared kingfisher for Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is currently found only in Goa, with no confirmed sightings outside of the state, making it a critical conservation focus. The masked booby has been chosen for the pelagic zones of Goa. This seabird represents the offshore marine ecosystem and is a vital habitat for various bird species.
The selection of these birds as mascots follows consultations with a wide range of experts, including scientists, bird tour operators, and conservationists.
To engage birdwatchers and conservationists, information panels will be installed at each sanctuary, providing detailed insights about these bird species, their behaviour, and the ecological importance of their habitats.
The unveiling ceremony was presided over by forest minister Vishwajit Rane. He also launched the Pran Rescue mobile app. It is a user-friendly application designed to facilitate the reporting of wild animals in distress, enabling quick response and support for injured or stranded wildlife.
