Ban imposed on swimming in natural water bodies

Margao: South Goa collector Egna Cleetus imposed a complete ban on swimming, bathing, or entering natural water bodies across South Goa. The prohibition will remain in force for 60 days.
The order covers waterfalls, abandoned quarries, rivers, lakes, and similar natural water bodies. The decision follows recommendations from SP (South), who pointed to recurring drowning incidents during the monsoon at tourist and local recreation spots, the order states.
Several fatal incidents occurred last year in areas including Sanguem, Mormugao, and Dharbandora. The police cited unpredictable water depths, slippery terrain, and dangerous currents as primary safety hazards. Despite existing warning signage, these locations continue to attract visitors who access them unsafely.
Police inspectors and mamlatdars have been directed to maintain strict vigilance and enforce the prohibition diligently. Violators will face punishment under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the order states.
