PANAJI: The state’s only zoo housed at the
Bondla wildlife sanctuary
recently welcomed a baby gaur (Indian bison) into its midst, bringing the population to a total of eight
bisons
.
“The
calf
, a female, was born on December 12, 2019, making it a winter
birth
,” zoo director,
Vikas Desai said.
Officials from the Bondla range forest office informed that the birth was a result of the first-time pregnancy of their zoo-born gaur, Pinky. The baby bison has not yet named, yet however the in-house veterinary doctor and enclosure keepers are closely watching the calf’s development.
“Based on ocular observations, the growth is normal, and the gaur is actively mingling with the other gaurs of the group,” an official said.
TOI had also reported the last gaur birth wherein another zoo-born, Rosa gave birth in August making it a monsoon birth. Her calf has been named Sindhu.
