MARGAO: The issue of stray cattle menace was discussed at the gram sabha of Assolda-Xelvon-Hodar panchayat on Sunday.

Villagers pointed out that herds of stray cattle are invariably found squatting or moving along the roads, thereby posing a risk to traffic. The panchayat assured the locals that assistance from the animal husbandry department will be taken to address the issue.

Issues concerning revision of house tax and introduction of garbage tax also came up for discussion. The gram sabha was told that as much of the revenue obtained from house tax went towards resources for garbage collection, and that as the government grants received by the panchayat were insufficient, it was imperative that garbage fees be levied per household by the panchayat. Most of the gram sabha members, however, voiced their opposition to the proposal. It was decided the issue would be taken up at the next gram sabha.

Gram sabha members also pointed out issues concerning water supply in some pockets and demanded that they be addressed forthwith.

Villagers also voiced their disapproval over failure of the electricity department in responding to complaints immediately. It was decided that the officials would be called for the next gram sabha and an explanation sought from them.
