Another BoI branch falls for Rs 68 lakh fake gold

MARGAO: Two days after a major gold loan fraud was detected at three branches of

Bank of India

, another similar case came to light at the bank’s Navelim branch on Saturday with the

Margao

town police registering an offence against 12 accused persons.

Police sources said the manager of the bank’s Navelim branch Om Prakash Bhagat lodged a complaint with the Margao town police.

The complaint states that Shanu Lotlikar, an approved valuator of the bank, certified

fake gold

ornaments made of yellow metal produced by 11 persons — they have been named as accused along with Lotlikar — as genuine gold ornaments, for mortgage for availing gold loan from the bank between May 2017 and July 2018. The bank was thus cheated to the tune of Rs 68 lakh, police sources said.

The police have booked an offence against 12 accused along with Lotlikar under charges of conspiracy to cheat the bank.
