GOA: The two-month fishing prohibition in Goa commenced on Saturday, with the majority of trawlers returning to their respective jetties by midnight, according to State Fisheries Minister Nilkant Halarnkar.
Halarnkar said that fishing using mechanised vessels is not allowed until July 31.
The ban has been implemented prior to the monsoon season to enable fish to breed in the sea, he explained.
According to the minister, there are 800 trawlers registered with the state fisheries department operating from various jetties, including Cutbona, Vasco (in South Goa), Malim and Caisuva (North Goa), as well as two smaller jetties at Cortalim and Talpona (South Goa).
Halarnkar assured that all jetties will be closely monitored to ensure that no trawler violates the ban.
