The clean-up drive aims at creating awareness about the effects of unscientific disposal of e-waste on public health and the environment.

The programme commenced on Saturday with a session for students from Class V to Class X on various forms of e-waste and their safe disposal.

GEMS CEO Sohan Prabhu spoke about the importance of scientific disposal of e-waste as opposed to handing it over to scrap dealers who only extract the saleable metal components and later dump the items in landfills, thus leading to carcinogenic metals such as lead, mercury, cobalt, nickel cadmium and arsenic polluting the ground water table.

Later, in a function at the Lotoulim panchayat hall, saplings and eco-friendly bags were distributed among villagers.

Nearly 300 kg of e-waste items, such as discarded computers, printers, UPS and mobile phones were collected.
