300 kg of e-waste collected during clean Loutolim drive
MARGAO
: Starting September on a cleaner and greener note, ex-students of the Saviour of the World High School, Loutoulim, under the banner Saviourites Alumni Association, Loutolim (SAAL) in association with the Global E-waste Management Systems (GEMS), organised a two-day e-waste awareness and collection drive which concludes on September 2.The programme commenced on Saturday with a session for students from Class V to Class X on various forms of e-waste and their safe disposal.
GEMS CEO Sohan Prabhu spoke about the importance of scientific disposal of e-waste as opposed to handing it over to scrap dealers who only extract the saleable metal components and later dump the items in landfills, thus leading to carcinogenic metals such as lead, mercury, cobalt, nickel cadmium and arsenic polluting the ground water table.
Nearly 300 kg of e-waste items, such as discarded computers, printers, UPS and mobile phones were collected.
