30 nurses at GMC get emergency lifesaving training

Panaji: Thirty nurses are currently undergoing three-day training in emergency lifesaving at the GMC’s national emergency lifesaving skill lab. Five trainers from the ministry of health, Delhi, are training these 30 nurses so that they, in turn, can train bystanders to be first responders and provide pre-hospital care in any emergency case to save lives.

The standalone lab, built at the GMC under a central govt scheme, has a nodal officer from the surgery department and is focused on training people to handle emergency cases before patients reach the hospital. The high-tech lab has seven high-class mannequins that mimic the human body, and are being used for the training.

“Nurses undergoing training will be our resource and will, in turn, train other nurses and other people on things like how to give CPR, what to do in a drowning case, or what to do if a child swallows a coin before they access hospital care,” GMC dean S Bandekar told TOI.

“In a way, this will be a parallel system that can work along with medical treatment in society. If we have alert people who know how to provide pre-hospital care in emergency situations, precious lives can be saved,” he said.

Training for the nurses will conclude on Thursday. A similar initiative was previously conducted at the lab for other members of society, including police personnel.

Health minister Vishwajit Rane said the advanced lab is an important step towards enhancing emergency medical training in the state.

“Through simulation technology, our healthcare professionals will be equipped with lifesaving skills needed to respond efficiently to critical situations,” he said.
