140 experts, academicians ready new state curriculum framework
Panaji: As the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 progresses in Goa from the new academic year 2025-26, the changes, besides in Class VI and X, will also be introduced at KG2 level. The implementation is being carried out in a phased manner after NEP was introduced from nursery level in 2023-24 at the foundational stage and at Class IX level in 2024-25 at the secondary stage.
Officials said that based on the new national curriculum framework (NCF) developed by NCERT to guide the implementation, Goa has already developed its state curriculum framework along with an implementation plan for all four stages of education. They said around 140 teachers, school heads, and education experts have worked at State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) to contextualise the new curriculum.
“Local components have been added, annual plans have been prepared, training modules have been developed and new textbooks for Konkani and Marathi framed by these experts. Experts from NCERT New Delhi guided these teams. A key focus in NEP is competency-based learning, emphasising understanding rather than rote memorisation,” said an official.
He said, just like last year, when NEP was introduced in Class IX for the first time, a team of top education officials visited schools taluka-wise to clarify doubts of schools, this year too the same exercise will be carried out from Class VI to X.
“Before implementing NEP in Class IX during the last academic year, Goa’s education secretary, director, Goa Board chairman, SCERT director and other officials at the directorate of education held consultations with school heads, management members, PTA members and senior teachers from schools across the state, taluka-wise. These meetings were conducted to address potential challenges that may be encountered and to find solutions collaboratively. A similar process is also planned this year for the successful implementation of NEP in Class X and VI,” said the official.
He said as new subjects of interdisciplinary area, vocational education, art education, and physical education have been added for Class IX and X, the Goa govt has already recruited additional vocational and art education teachers in most govt and aided schools in Goa to support the implementation.
“Workshops for teachers teaching in Class X and Class VI have already begun from this month. For the foundation stage, which is up to Class III, NEP 2020 emphasises on Panchakosha development, an ancient Indian concept that promotes holistic growth. Goa’s SCERT has prepared a teachers’ manual mapping the curricular goals and competencies as envisaged in the NCF 2023,” said the official.
