Ghaziabad: The body of an unidentified woman with severe injuries was found inside a drain in the Madhuban Bapudham area of Ghaziabad on Saturday, police said on Sunday.
Police said that preliminary findings suggest it is a case of murder, though no signs of sexual assault have been found. The body has been sent for postmortem examination.
Kavi Nagar ACP Suryabali Maurya said that on Saturday evening, police received information about an unidentified body floating in the drain. It was first spotted by a man passing by, who informed other locals. A police team soon reached the spot.
“Initial investigation revealed that the woman was in her mid-twenties. She was wearing a light pink saree and had injuries on her neck and hands,” the officer said.
The ACP added that her photographs have been circulated on social media, as well as shared with nearby police stations and adjoining districts, to help identify her. “We suspect that someone killed her and dumped the body in the drain,” Maurya said.
No CCTV cameras were installed near the spot where the body was found, and the area is adjacent to a forest.
“However, we are tracking the routes leading to the spot. Police are also checking missing persons complaints registered in the district over the past 48 hours. More than five teams are working on the case, and one team is questioning people in nearby areas,” Maurya added.
Police said that a case will be registered after the victim is identified or based on the autopsy report.
