“Around 7am on Tuesday, the priest of the temple informed us that the donation box had been stolen, upon which we checked the CCTV footage. We found that, after taking out the money from the donation box, the thief threw the box outside the temple,” said Saurabh Sharma, AOA president of Devika Skypers Society.

An FIR was subsequently registered against unidentified persons under Section 303 (2) (theft) of the BNS at Nandgram police station.

Tuesday’s incident marks the fourth such robbery reported in the area in ten days, with the thief having allegedly stolen around Rs 4-5 lakh from these societies’ temples.

Around 4am on Aug 10, a donation box was stolen from the temple of Himalaya Tanishq. The next day, the person stole the temple donation box from Uninav heights society around 3.20am. Around 1.20am on Aug 12, the donation box was stolen from Star Rameshwaram society. All four societies where donation boxes were stolen are located in the Raj Nagar Extension area.

According to the residents, the thief gained access to the societies by scaling the perimeter walls.

They also alleged that the perpetrator had knowledge of the locations of the security cameras. In some instances, the thief even draped a piece of fabric over the CCTV to obstruct the recording.

“The recent string of incidents targeting temples has raised concerns and suspicions among many. The fact that these events have occurred in quick succession, with remarkably similar timings, suggests a pattern that cannot be ignored,” said Deepanshu Mittal, another resident of the society.
