Ghaziabad: Over 800 police personnel will man the counting venue at Govindpuri’s New Anaj Mandi on Tuesday as counting of votes for the five assembly segments in the constituency begins around 8 am. Votes for the Sahibabad segment will be counted in 41 rounds, followed by Loni, where 38 rounds of counting will take place.
For the Muradnagar and Ghaziabad segments, counting will happen in 37 rounds each, and for Modinagar, a part of the Baghpat Lok Sabha seat, the counting will be conducted in 28 rounds.
A two-tier security system will be implemented at the venue, officials said. “A 100m area from the counting venue has been also earmarked as a no-vehicle zone for people without official permission. Candidates will be allowed 15 polling agents, whose credentials will be verified beforehand,” an official said.
A total of 14,68,710 votes were cast in the constituency spread across five assembly seats.
BJP candidate and incumbent MLA Atul Garg said he was confident of a massive win. BSP’s Nand Kishor Pundir, however, dismissed the exit polls. “The exit polls have written off the opposition. On Tuesday, they will have to eat their words as far as the Ghaziabad Lok Sabha seat is concerned. The elephant will romp home,” Pundir said.
Congress-SP’s Dolly Sharma, too, seemed optimistic a day before the counting. “We have worked very hard. It will pay off.”
