'Marry an Indian? That can never happen': Ghaziabad sisters' bodies cremated during evening hours, diary leaves cops baffled

GHAZIABAD: "You expected our marriage to an Indian, that can never happen," wrote three minor sisters from Ghaziabad in a pocket diary that police say has become central to the investigation into their alleged suicide, a tragedy that has shocked the nation.The sisters — Nishika (16), Prachi (14) and Pakhi (12) — allegedly jumped to their deaths from the ninth floor of Bharat City Society in the Teela Mod police station area on Wednesday. All three died of head injuries, a fact confirmed by postmortem reports, police officials said. Their bodies were cremated the same evening at Delhi’s Nigam Bodh Ghat on the banks of the Yamuna, with the last rites performed by their father, Chetan. Additional Commissioner of Police (Shalimar Garden) Atul Kumar Singh said it was not immediately clear why the cremation was conducted on Wednesday night, adding that it may have been due to personal reasons of the family.Police recovered a nine-page pocket diary from the sisters’ room, which offers a glimpse into their inner world marked by an intense attachment to Korean culture and distress over repeated conflicts at home. The diary repeatedly refers to their love for Korea and alleges that their family tried to force them to give up those interests.“We love Korean. Love, love, love,” the diary states, describing itself as a “true life story” and urging readers to believe what is written in it.The note accuses the parents of opposing the sisters’ choices, including their future marriage. “You tried to make us give up Korean. Korean was our life… You expected our marriage to an Indian, that can never happen,” it says.The diary also contains allegations of physical punishment and ends with an apology addressed to their father. “Death is better for us than your beatings. That is why we are committing suicide… Sorry Papa,” it reads.Deputy Commissioner of Police (Trans-Hindon) Nimish Patil said the diary has been seized and is being examined in detail. “We are looking into the circumstances in which the diary was written and all related aspects,” he said.Police are also probing the family’s financial condition. An office-bearer of the residents’ body, speaking on condition of anonymity, claimed that the girls’ father was under severe financial stress after allegedly suffering losses of more than Rs 2 crore in the stock market.The financial strain reportedly led to frequent clashes at home, the resident said, adding that at one point a mobile phone was allegedly sold to pay an electricity bill. DCP Patil confirmed that the financial angle is also being investigated as police try to piece together the sequence of events that led to the deaths.(With qgency inputs)
