Man strangles wife, sends selfie with her body to kin in Ghaziabad; hangs self

Ghaziabad: A 30-year-old factory worker died by suicide after killing his 28-year-old wife at their home in Ankur Vihar on Friday, police said.

According to police, Shyam Goswami and his wife Priya had been married for nine years and have an eight-year-old daughter who is living with her grandparents in Shyam’s hometown Etah.

Police said Shyam had returned from his hometown on Thursday morning and police believe that he and Priya got into an argument that night. Around 3pm on Friday, Shyam’s younger brother Praveen called police after he found the two dead inside their home.

“Initial investigation revealed that the man first strangled his wife using her dupatta. Later, he took a selfie with her body, positioning his body on her legs, and around 12.30pm, he sent it to six family members,” said DCP (Rural) Vivek Yadav.

Around 2pm, Shyam’s older sister checked her WhatsApp and saw the photo, the officer said. She immediately called Praveen and told him to visit their brother’s house.

“He reached his brother's house around 2.30pm. The house was locked from the inside, and he knocked on the gate for ten minutes but when no one opened it, he climbed a water pipe to reach the terrace. When he came downstairs, he found their bodies,” DCP Yadav said.

Initial investigation revealed that the couple were having marital issues and would fight often. Further investigation is underway and autopsy reports are awaited, the officer said.
