GHAZIABAD: The hot weather coupled with a series of long weekends and the IPL season saw beer consumption skyrocket in the city.
While beer sales typically soar every summer, it touched a record high between April and June. Beer worth Rs 397.1 crore was sold in Ghaziabad in the last three months, data shared by the excise department showed. This was nearly a 16% increase from the corresponding period last year when the excise department mopped up a Rs 373.8 crore revenue.
While NCR cities received light showers on Friday, temperatures in the region had soared to nearly 50 degrees Celsius in May and June.
Avik Rai, a resident of Sahibabad, said that along with the traditional lemonade, lassi and buttermilk, beer is also a preferred summer beverage.
“The light flavours along with bubbling carbonation and cold temperatures make beer the perfect way to cool down on a sizzling hot summer day,” he said on Saturday.
Ghaziabad excise inspector Sanjay Singh attributed the record sales to the excruciating heat and no changes in the prices.
“Between April and June, 1.3 crore litres of beer was consumed in Ghaziabad. This is nearly a 16% rise from 1.15 crore litres sold in the same period last year. With the onset of monsoon, beer sales are likely to slump, but the demand is likely to continue till September,” he said.
During the three months, 53.4 lakh litres of country-made liquor was sold this year against 48.5 lakh litres sold last year.
A total of 31.2 lakh litres of imported liquor was sold in the last three months, marginally less than the 32.6 lakh litres sold last year.
In June, Vinod Giri of the Brewers’ Association of India, which represents leading beer makers Carlsberg, Anheuser-Busch InBev and United Breweries, had predicted that beer sales volume was expected to jump 10% this summer with the demand at its highest since the onset of the Covid pandemic.
