GHAZIABAD: An engineer and his family were allegedly beaten up by two brothers following a heated argument over firecrackers the former had lit at VVIP housing society in Raj Nagar Extension.

In a video of the incident that went viral on social media, the engineer and the two accused could be seen hitting each other.

In her complaint to police, the engineer's wife alleged that the family had lit sparklers around 9pm when society residents - Devesh and Dishank Tyagi - came out of their flat and assaulted her husband. When she and her 64-year-old mother-in-law tried to intervene, she alleged that she was harassed too.

"The accused had also threatened to kill our family. They told us that they originally belonged to Sihani Gate village and could call 500 people to the society within minutes. Now, my family is living in fear," she said.

On the other hand, Devesh claimed that his 12-year-old son was standing in the balcony around that time when a firecracker lit by the engineer's family hit him. "After my son suffered burns to his hair in the incident, I went down and asked them not to lit firecrackers inside the society compound. The family refused, leading to an argument."

Rajesh Siddu, SHO, Nandgram police station, said, "As soon as we were alerted, a police team reached the spot and pacified both the parties."

An FIR was registered against both the Tyagi brothers on the complaint from the engineer's wife under IPC sections 354 (molestation), 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

Later, a counter-FIR was filed against the engineer's family on a complaint by Devesh Tyagi, the owners of a banquet hall, under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 and 506 of IPC. "An investigation is underway and action will follow," the SHO said.
