GHAZIABAD: Police claimed to have busted a sham call centre in Sahibabad and arrested six people for duping youths on the pretext of sending them abroad for jobs. The accused, cops said, would acquire the details of their targets, including contact numbers, from various job portals and call them up.

The accused have been identified as Vinay Negi (32), a resident of Meerut, Devesh Bihari (36), originally from Agra, Ajay Singh (25), a resident of Delhi, Kuldeep Tyagi (26), a resident of Crossing Republik in Ghaziabad, Gaurav Srivastava (26), a resident of Noida, and Ankur Singh (27), a resident of Firozabad.

Police swung into action after Naveen Kumar, a resident of Crossing Republik, recently lodged a complaint at the local police station, claiming that he was duped of Rs 13 lakh by the gang that offered him a job in Australia.

On the complaint, an FIR for cheating and criminal conspiracy was registered at Crossing Republik police station. Earlier a similar FIR was lodged at Sahibabad police station, on a complaint from another victim.

Diksha Sharma, DCP (trans-Hindon), said they nabbed the accused on Wednesday, using technical surveillance. “During interrogation, the six told us that they would acquire data from job portals and contact their targets to offer them employment at private banks, IT firms and in other sectors abroad,” she said.

“First they would ask their targets about their educational qualifications and then offer them jobs. Once the accused gained the trust of their targets, they would start demanding money for paperwork, interview calls and offer letters. On an average, they used to charge between Rs 3 and 15 lakh from a victim,” Sharma said.
