A first for Gzb: Govt’s cert for trans man after gender affirming op

GHAZIABAD: A 28-year-old transgender man who underwent a gender-affirming surgery was issued a transgender (male) certificate by the social welfare department.

The certificate — the first to be issued after a sex-change surgery in the district — was given following a report from doctors at MMG Hospital.

Transgender certificates, issued under The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2020, are nationally recognised and issued by the ministry of social justice & empowerment. The document is important for availing benefits under various govt schemes.

District social welfare officer Amarjeet Singh said the certificate has been issued online and a physical certificate will be issued on July 8. The trans person, who underwent the surgery at AIIMS Delhi in April, applied for the certificate at the chief medical officer’s office in May based on an examination report of MMG hospital doctors and a certificate issued by the department of burn and plastic surgery at AIIMS.

Subsequently, CMO Dr Bhavtosh Shankhdhar constituted a board of three doctors — Dr Mahendra Kumar, Dr Sushma Bharti and Dr Alok Ranjan — for a medical examination. After studying the reports, he sent a letter to the administration recommending a transgender (male) certificate be issued to the applicant.

“This is the first certificate to be issued in the district for a transgender (male) post gender-affirmation surgery. For certificates of transgender by birth, one can simply apply on the National Portal of Transgender Persons. So far, 57 transgender certificates have been issued in the district. The main idea behind initiating the process is to break stereotypes around the transgender community,” Singh said.
