Councillor’s arrest: Colleagues plan stir after election results

Ghaziabad: BJP councillor from ward number 28, Sudhir Kumar walked out of Dasna prison on Wednesday evening after a district court granted him bail, nine days after his arrest for allegedly vandalising a roadside kiosk and thrashing its owner and sons.He claimed there was an attempt to “muzzle” him for raising his voice against encroachment. “I was provoked. Expletives were used against me by invoking my caste. It triggered a chain of unfortunate events. Now that I have been granted bail in the case, I will meet my colleagues and the mayor and abide by whatever they have planned,” Kumar told TOI.On May 21, Kumar, his 2 brothers, and 12 unknown persons were booked under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (intimidation), 392 (robbery), and 354 (assault on women) after a complaint was submitted by a vendor at Sahibabad police station. The complainant claimed Kumar had been demanding Rs 6,000 per month as a ‘goonda tax’ and when they denied it, Kumar and his men vandalised their kiosk and thrashed her family.On May 23, around 40 councillors scuffled with police personnel as they were stopped from marching to police commissioner Ajay Kumar Mishra’s residence in Raj Nagar over Kumar’s “arbitrary” arrest. The police, however, said they had ample proof against Kumar.Councillors from the BJP are planning another demonstration after the Lok Sabha results are announced on June 4 to protest against Kumar’s arrest. Over 5,000 sanitation workers have also lent their support, another councillor said.
