GHAZIABAD: What's in a name? It's worth one's name in gold if one is a resident of "Fortune" apartment.
Preeti Sirohi was yet to come to terms with the theft at her Raj Nagar Extension flat last week when she received a courier on Monday morning. As she unboxed it, she was in for a shock.
The packet contained some of the jewellery that had been stolen from the flat last week when the family had gone to celebrate Diwali with their relatives.
"We had left home on October 23. When we returned four days later, we found that our house had been burgled. Jewellery worth around Rs 20 lakh was missing from the locker," she told TOI.
The jewellery that came back to Preeti is believed to worth Rs 5 lakh. The packet had 'Rajdeep Jewellers, Sarafa Bazaar, Hapur' as the address of the sender. "As we opened the packet, we were shocked to find gold inside. For a moment, we were lost. But when we came to, we realised that it's our own jewellery that had been stolen. But, much of it is still missing," Preeti's son, Harsh, said.
After the family had lodged the complaint of theft, police had scanned CCTV footage and found a man in his early twenties walking out of the society with a school bag on his shoulders. The bag belonged to Preeti's son.
Anshu Jain, circle officer 2, said that after being informed about the courier, a police team was rushed to the sender's address in Hapur. "There was no shop by the name of Rajdeep Jewellers. Even the phone number mentioned in the packet was fake," she added.
The police team then checked the outlet of the courier company from where the packet was sent. "We have zeroed down on two men seen in CCTV footage. We are trying to trace them," the officer said.
