NAMAKKAL: Three people, including two women, lost their lives after being hit by an Omni van in Namakkal district early Sunday morning. The incident took place while they were out for a morning walk.
The victims were named as K Malaiannan, 70, his wife Nirmala, 55, and their neighbour S Sellammal, 65. All were residents of Rasipalayam near Mohanur in Namakkal district.
The trio had a routine of walking every morning and stepped outside their home as usual.
At approximately 5 am on Sunday, while walking along the Mohanur-Namakkal state highway, they were struck by a Maruti Omni van travelling from Mohanur to Namakkal. "They died from their severe injuries at the scene," reported a police official from the Mohanur police station. The driver of the van, P Manikandan, 30, also suffered injuries.
Mohanur police arrived at the scene to recover the bodies. They transported the injured driver to a private hospital in Namakkal town and sent the deceased to the Namakkal Govt Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.
A case was filed against the driver of the Omni van for causing the accident, and further investigations are ongoing.
