Erode district collector appeals to public to utilise PM Surya Ghar solar scheme
ERODE: Erode district collector S Kandasamy has appealed to the public to take advantage of the Prime Minister's Surya Ghar solar scheme, which offers subsidies, to lower their electricity bills.
The collector on Wednesday inspected the installation of solar panels on the rooftops of several houses in the city. He held discussions on the benefits of the scheme with beneficiaries of the scheme.
The collector stated that the scheme, initiated in the state by Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited, has been operational in the district since Feb 29, 2024. "This scheme allows for increased electricity generation through solar energy, paving the way for a greener and brighter future," he said.
He noted that all households could take advantage of the opportunity to install solar panels, generate electricity and significantly cut down their electricity expenses. Additionally, the subsidy provided by the central and state govts under this scheme amounts to Rs 30,000 for 1 kW, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW and Rs 78,000 for 3 kW and above.
The collector clarified that the govt subsidy would be directly deposited into the beneficiary's bank account within a week of the installation of the solar panels. Given that solar panels have a lifespan of approximately 27 years, this scheme offers long-term benefits. Only minimal maintenance is needed periodically. Solar panels with a capacity of 1 kW can generate 4 to 5 units daily. It is estimated that installing 1 kW of solar panels can lead to a reduction in electricity consumption by 250 to 300 units over a two-month period.
M Sadhana of NGGO Colony installed a 3 kW solar panel on her house's roof at a cost of Rs 2 lakh under this scheme. "We received a subsidy of Rs 78,000 from the govt within a week," she said.
“We are currently generating and utilizing the electricity needed for their home through solar energy. Our electricity bill is only Rs 300 for two months. Previously, we paid Rs 1,800 for electricity every two months. Thanks to this scheme, we can save up to Rs 15,000 annually on electricity bills," she said.
The public can apply for this scheme on www.pmsuryaghar.gov.in.
