Wrestler gives her testimony in vulnerable witness room

New Delhi: Delhi Police on Friday informed a court hearing a case of alleged sexual harassment of women wrestlers by former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh that the security provided to the complainants had not been withdrawn and there was some "miscommunication".Additional public prosecutor Atul Kumar Srivastava, appearing for Delhi Police, told the court of additional chief judicial magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot, "This was a miscommunication. It has been rectified." On Thursday, after three women wrestlers moved court alleging that Delhi Police had withdrawn their security, the court directed police to make "immediate and appropriate arrangements" for the security of a woman wrestler, who testified on Friday.The court decided to record her testimony in the vulnerable witness deposition room, where the face of the accused was not visible to her and public/media was not allowed. Singh was present at Rouse Avenue Courts to attend the hearing. Advocate Rajiv Mohan, appearing for the BJP functionary, said he wanted to cross-examine the complainant in person and claimed that the vulnerable witness room was only for minors. However, a counsel of the women wrestlers read from high court rules to justify the use of the vulnerable witness deposition room in the case.Outside the courtroom, Singh told reporters, "You do not have the right to ask me (any question)."On July 26, the court began the trial in the case after ordering on May 10 the framing of charges of sexual harassment, intimidation and outraging the modesty of women against Singh for harassing five women wrestlers. The court also charged the co-accused, suspended assistant secretary of WFI Vinod Tomar, with the offence of criminal intimidation against one of the survivors. On May 21, both accused denied the charges and claimed trial.
