NEW DELHI: A 28-year-old woman allegedly died due to a gunshot injury during a family function at New Roshanpura in southwest Delhi on Friday night. The deceased, identified as Amita Dahiya, had gone to attend the birthday party of her sister-in-law's son when the incident took place.
Police suspect that a relative of the victim's husband had fired from his gun as he has been absconding ever since the incident took place.
The deceased's husband, Sunil, has been detained and is being questioned.
A case of murder has been registered and an SDM inquiry has been initiated, said police.
The deceased reportedly died of a bullet injury in the left side of her forehead. "At first it appeared that the victim had been accidentally shot during a celebratory firing at the party. When police found out that she had been shot from point-blank range, a case of murder was registered.
"We are questioning all the people who were present at the birthday party," said a senior police officer.
Sources claimed that the party was in full swing on the ground floor of the house when the people present there heard a gunshot.
Amita was rushed to a private hospital where she was declared brought dead, said police sources. Amita's body has been sent to Rao Tula Ram Hospital for postmortem.
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased alleged that she had been harassed by her in-laws for dowry ever since her marriage five years ago.
The deceased's brother, Mukesh, and father, Suresh, have alleged that Amita had been murdered for dowry by her in-laws.
Amita was a nurse in Girdharilal Maternity Hospital while her husband, Sunil, worked in the administrative department in Metro Lifeline Hospital.
They had been married for five years and were staying at Roshanpura in west Delhi. The couple has a four-year-old son Dipanshu and a two-year-old daughter, Tanvi. Sunil's father is a sub-inspector, claimed sources.
