NEW DELHI: Waiting outside the mortuary for her daughter’s body, Krishna Devi rued letting her return to her husband Gulshan Das after a bitter fight between them just two weeks ago.

“Had she had not gone back to him, my daughter would have still been alive,” Devi said, while being consoled by her family members at Safdarjung Hospital. Sunita was the youngest of three sisters and earlier used to live in west Delhi’s Naraina with her mother.

On July 9, Sunita had filed a

complaint

of domestic violence against her husband. The complaint, accessed by TOI, had alleged that Das and his mother were harassing Sunita for

dowry

.

“I got married five months ago and my husband and mother-in-law beat me up and have been demanding dowry. We had told them before the marriage that we did not have anything to give,” Sunita alleged in her complaint. She further said that on July 8, she was again beaten up and forced out of the house after which she went to her mother’s house in Naraina.

Police said that the complaint was noted as a diary entry and the allegations were being investigated.

Family members said that it was the second marriage for both Sunita and Das and was arranged through a relative in February. However, soon after the marriage, the couple developed differences and Sunita allegedly complained often of being ill-treated by her husband and mother-in-law. She had gone back to Das only a few days ago.

Das worked in IIT-Delhi in the department of bio-chemical engineering and bio-technology and had started as a senior mechanic in 2015. He was working as a senior lab assistant.

Das’ colleagues told police that he did not share much about his personal life to them and did not show any signs of being under stress.
