NEW DELHI: Harneet Singh Sachdeva was the sole breadwinner in his family. The 29-year-old lived on rent in west Delhi’s Chander Vihar with his mother and wife of three months in a modest dwelling. Sachdeva was an employee in a finance company. The family lived a simple life, making do with what the young man earned from his job and contracts for house painting.

On Wednesday morning, Sachdeva decided to have some food at Ketan’s Food Court in Tagore Garden. It proved a tragic decision. He made a video call to his wife just before he was assaulted, saying he would return home soon. The next phone call she received was at 4.45am from Sachdeva’s friends, who informed her of his death.

Rahul Agarwal, 27, a friend of Sachdeva, said the latter had been a regular customer at Ketan’s Food Court for some time. The two often visited Tagore Garden because many restaurants in the locality offered late-night food services. It was a convenient option for those seeking a meal outside of regular hours. As a local resident said, “People come in their cars and sit outside these restaurants at any time of the night.”

Agarwal shared some insights into the deceased's life with TOI. He revealed that Sachdeva had completed his Class XII at Sukho Khalsa Higher Secondary School in Tilak Nagar. Despite his modest educational background, he proved a resolute worker and a steady provider for his family.

Adesh Bhatnagar, 40, Sachdeva’s neighbour, appreciated the hard work Sachdeva was putting in to ensure his family did not feel deprived. “He hardly had any quarrels of any kind with anyone in the locality. He was a good man whose life revolved around his work and family,” said Bhatnagar.

Friends remember him as an amicable person. “Despite being married, Harneet stayed in touch with us,” said Deepak, a friend who lived in the same locality. “We went for drives whenever he had time from his job. We grew up together roaming in the streets of Tilak Nagar.”

Sachdeva’s mother and wife are now faced with the daunting task of navigating life without their financial provider and emotional support. The community has rallied around the grieving family, offering assistance and condolences at this difficult time for Sachdeva’s survivors.

The murder has also raised concerns about the safety and security of customers at local eateries. The escalation of a minor dispute into a fatal altercation has highlighted the need for better conflict resolution mechanisms and stricter regulations to ensure the well-being of customers.
