Victims' kin called for blood tests
NOIDA: The procedure of identifying victims of the Nithari killings started on Saturday when their parents and relatives were called for a blood test required for DNA verification.
A list of 17 confirmed victims was compiled and their relatives informed a day in advance that they were required to appear for the test.
At 11 am, after their meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the families were taken to the government hospital in Sector-30 where they had to wait till 1 pm for the blood samples to be collected.

Of the 17 families, only 14 samples were taken. Said a police officer overseeing the tests: "Families of Payal and Sheikh Raja were not at home when we went to call them. Family of Nisha, who was staying here with her uncle James, is not here and we are waiting for them to come from West Bengal. Their testing would be done hopefully by Wednesday."
The blood samples have been handed over to the police who will then send them, along with samples from bones recovered from the accused's D-5 house, to a CSFL lab, probably in Hyderabad on Sunday.
Said Richa Saxena, senior pathologist at the hospital: "Blood samples have been collected in EDTA vials, in which testing is required to be done within a week. It can't take any longer as samples in these vials have a short life and would be of no use if testing is delayed."

Explaining why only 17 samples were collected, a senior police officer said: "We have 17 confirmed victims based on the confession of the accused and identification of clothes by relatives. It would be easier confirming the identity of victims based on their DNA in this case. As and when we get confirmation of more victims, we will test their relatives as well for a DNA match."
Of the 17 families called in for DNA testing, five families have not yet been given compensation. Authorities are waiting for confirmation of victims' identity before handing out more compensation.
