DEHRADUN: Delhi gang rape victim Nirbhaya’s family has refused to accept a Rs 1.8 lakh cheque returned by the Sai Institute where she studied physiotherapy and instead wants the money, given as fee for her 4-year course, to be used to render financial assistance to needy students. Institute chairman Harish Arora said Nirbhaya’s father and brother declined the cheque when they reached here on Tuesday to collect her final year examination marksheet.
The 24-year-old girl had secured 73% marks in her final examination conducted by HNB Garhwal University in 2012. Nirbhaya’s father and brother were overwhelmed after they got the marksheet saying that although they were proud of her feat, they would continue to feel her absence forever.
“This agony and pain will continue to haunt us so long we are alive,” her father said. He urged the institute to utilize her fee amount to run a scholarship for needy students. “This will help my daughter’s soul rest in peace,” he said. The father said he had decided to send Nirbhaya to the Dehradun-based institute as he considered the city “safe” for women. Nirbhaya had moved to Delhi after appearing in her last semester examination.
