Voters relocating from central Delhi colonies asked to update address
New Delhi: Owing to a number of families shifting out of government housing colonies in central Delhi and relocation of a few slum clusters in the past few years, the office of the chief electoral officer of Delhi has urged the affected people to get their names included in the electoral roll of the area they now reside in.With the summary revision exercise of the electoral roll ending on December 9, the election office has asked people to fill up Form-8, which pertains to change of address of a registered voter, and submit it either online or offline before the last date.Summary revision of the electoral roll is an annual exercise carried out in each state and Union territory to update and purify the electoral roll with new enrolments, delete the entries of the deceased and make necessary corrections in basic details as desired by the registered voters.According to officials of the election office, several government colonies and residential buildings have been relocated due to redevelopment, removal of encroachment and other reasons.“All registered voters of such shifted clusters, government colonies, residential buildings are hereby informed that only a person who is ordinarily resident at a given address can enrol himself or herself as an elector of that constituency,”the election office said.“Accordingly, all registered voters of such clusters, government colonies, residential buildings are hereby requested to get themselves registered on the electoral roll at the new place by filing Form-8 and get their names deleted from the previous place of residence by declaring their previous EPIC (electoral photo identity card) detailsin Form-8 itself,” it added.Government colonies that are being redeveloped include the ones in Sarojini Nagar, Nauroji Nagar, Kasturba Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Srinivaspuri, Mohammadpur and Thyagraj Nagar. Officials said several slum clusters had also been demolished by different government agencies.“The names of registered voters of all such localities will be deleted by the electoral registration officer concerned after following due process as the voters have ceased to be residents of such areas. It is important for them to get registered as voters in localities where they have shifted now,” said an official. After accepting applications for new enrolments and changes in details until December 9, the office of the chief electoral officer will dispose of claims and objections by December 26. The final publication of the electoral roll will take place on January 5, 2024.
