Undertrial alleges torture in Rohini jail
An undertrial prisoner has approached a Delhi court accusing the superintendent of Rohini jail and other prison officers of torturing him at the behest of Romesh Sharma, an alleged frontman of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
Satpal Bedi, who is in jail in connection with a case lodged at Hari Nagar police station here, appeared before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Vinod Yadav and sought action against the prison officials.

"The jail superintendent, the ward in-charge and some jail inmates have assaulted me inside the prison as a result of which I have received burn injuries on my back," Bedi told the CMM in his plea and sought protection as well as stern action against the officers responsible for the excesses meted out to him in jail.
Considering the plea, the court ordered a medical examination to ascertain how much truth was there in the allegations. The medical examination confirmed that Bedi had received injuries on his body.
In his plea submitted in court, the undertrial said that earlier he was lodged in Tihar Jail. But constant threats from associates of Romesh Sharma left him a scared person and he moved a petition seeking that he be transferred to some other jail citing the threats as a ground. However, even as the jail administration acceded to his plea and shifted him to Rohini Jail, the harassment continued.
Bedi alleged that even in Rohini jail, the associates of Romesh Sharma managed to zero in on him and in this they were helped by the prison officials. He alleged that Sharma`s henchmen in Rohini jail connived with the prison officials and began assaulting him on many occasions. Bedi said this had left him with no option but to seek action against the jail officers.
After taking the medical report into the records, the court posted the matter for further hearing on November 22.
