NEW DELHI: Police have arrested two brothers, aged 19 and 20 years, and their 22-year-old friend for the murder of a sex worker at GB Road on March 7.
A probe has revealed that the trio intended to rob a business outlet in east Delhi and before executing the plan, they went to a brothel where a brawl broke out over payment. In a bid to flee, the men shot at the woman and her pimp.
Cops scanned over 100 hours of CCTV footage and spotted one of them talking on phone. The officers then obtained dump data (active mobile numbers in a cell tower) and verified each of the 5,000 numbers to zero in on the culprits.
DCP (Central) Sanjay Sain said that the siblings have been identified as Kaka and Happy, from Rajasthan. Their friend has been identified as Anil from Punjab. The suspects were involved in several criminal cases. Happy and Anil met when they were lodged in Sangrur Jail in Punjab, the DCP added.
The sex worker (aged 30) was shot around 2pm. Cops received a call at 2.15pm. The 30-year-old woman and her pimp, 28, had already been taken to a hospital. The woman had a bullet injury on the back of her neck, while Imran had injury on his shoulder. The woman later succumbed to her injuries.
The investigating team scanned large number of cameras at railway stations and bus terminals to track their route of escape, police said. It was found that after committing the crime, they went to New Delhi railway station. Cops then scanned all the phone numbers active at GB Road at the time of the incident and at the tower near the station to narrow down the list of active numbers.
The suspects were finally identified and raids were conducted at different places in Western UP and Punjab, which led to the arrest of the three suspects.
The accused disclosed during questioning that Kaka used to work at a popular sweet shop in east Delhi and was aware that there would be huge cash collection during Holi. They then planned a heist. The siblings procured pistols from Bihar and reached New Delhi railway station on March 7. Anil too reached there from Punjab, after which they went to GB Road, police said.
