Touring Delhi, elevated: Govt to launch double-decker buses on heritage circuit
New Delhi: In a bid to boost tourism and enhance the sightseeing experience for international and domestic visitors in the national capital, Delhi govt is set to launch double-decker buses later this month to connect major heritage and cultural landmarks across the city. Senior officials said the circuit will cover prominent attractions, including the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, National War Memorial, Bharat Mandapam, the new Parliament complex, Kartavya Path and Dilli Haat. The project is part of a broader plan to present the Central Vista and adjoining landmarks as a seamless tourist experience. Initially, one double-decker bus and two electric buses will operate on the route.
Officials added that evening tours are also being planned, with the route largely finalised. The open-top double-decker bus will offer elevated, panoramic views of key sites, making sightseeing more immersive. The launch is likely to coincide with the first anniversary of the current Delhi govt. The electric double-decker bus, built by a private manufacturer, has been provided under a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative. It was earlier stationed at the Okhla depot under the transport department before being handed over to the tourism department. "The ticketing and operational details will be announced soon," a senior official said. The launch follows chief minister Rekha Gupta's budget announcement outlining plans to develop a new tourist circuit focused on national landmarks. The circuit is envisioned as a flagship attraction highlighting India's democratic institutions and modern heritage. Officials said the initiative is expected to not only improve the tourism experience but also encourage longer stays by visitors and promote sustainable, electric public transport in the city.
