NEW DELHI: Taking cognizance of a complaint by a jail inmate alleging torture at the behest of Romesh Sharma — an alleged front man of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim — a trial court on Monday issued summons against Rohini jail officials, including its superintendent.
Additional chief metropolitan magistrate Sunil Chaudhary sought the presence of superintendent and assistant superintendent of District Jail Rohini in the capital, besides Sharma, on December 13, saying there was sufficient ground to proceed against them.

‘‘I am of the view that there is sufficient ground to proceed further and to issue summons against the accused for the offences punishable under Sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement), 357 (assault in attempt of wrongfully confining a person) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC,’’ the court said.
The court took a serious view of the allegations of Satpal Bedi, who is serving life term following his conviction in a criminal case, that he was being tortured by the jail authorities at the behest of Sharma.
