NEW DELHI: The special cell has arrested three highway robbers and recovered stolen goods, including a truckload of tea, worth about Rs 50 lakh, from them. Officials said the gang was involved in several robberies in New Delhi and the Ring Road area. The accused have been identified as Anwar Hussain (23), Shanu (22) and Mohammad Nazir (25).
They were arrested from near Anand Vihar on Sunday after a tip-off.
Other goods recovered were spare auto parts, carpets, fabric items, submersible pumps, electronic items, bed sheets, garments and stationary items.
The gang leader, Anwar Hussain, was released on bail on February 28. "The gang used to gather information about the movements of goods vehicles. They would follow the vehicle in an autorickshaw and a motorcycle. They would intercept the vehicle and threaten the driver with a country-made pistol. They would then steal the goods vehicle," said a senior police officer. They would take the loot to their godown, which they had taken on rent in Indirapuram in Ghaziabad.
Their recent robberies included that of a tempo full of tea boxes near the ISBT flyover on March 1. On March 3, they allegedly stole 166 cartons containing stationary, spare auto parts, carpets, fabric items, submersible pumps, electronic items, bed sheets and garments from a vehicle.
