NEW DELHI: With arrest of three persons, south district police claimed to have busted a gang that was providing mobile phone connections on basis of fake identity cards in Vasant Kunj area.
The accused have been identified as Zia-ur-Rehman (23), Anis-ur-Rehman (23) and Mohammad Qumar Ul Zama (21). The police said they have seized three mobile phones, four SIM cards, several photocopies of fake identity cards of MHA, NBCC and IBM, fake PAN cards, driving licenses and 62 customer information cards from the three.
The cops stumbled upon the gang last week when a cyber cafe owner in Vasant Vihar area informed them about suspicious activity of a person visiting his shop.
The shop owner looked at the computer after the man had left and found that he was preparing fake identity cards of government organizations.
He informed the police about this man and they put the suspect Anis Ur-Rehman under surveillance. His identity documents and address provided at the cyber cafe were found to be fake, said a police officer. Anis was arrested from Munirka on October 26. His interrogation revealed the names of two more members of the gang and they too were arrested, said the police.
"Interrogation of the three revealed that accused Zia and Qumarul Zama were working as sales executives of a leading mobile service provider. They hatched a conspiracy to procure maximum connections from DSAs by using fake IDs generated through computer,'' said DCP (south) HGS Dhaliwal.
Zia brought in Anis, who had good knowledge of computers, into the gang. The three forged identity cards of important government organization and procured over 100 connections.
Cops said the activities of gang not only caused financial loss to mobile service providers but might have also helped terrorists. They said the investigations were on to find out if the three had any links with terror outfits.
